Eileen Herlie - Myrtle Fargate |
Show: All My Children
Story: Death of Myrtle Fargate
There have been many storylines over the years that have been sad beyond words. Just in All My Children alone there have been so many! There are the breakups and the deaths of characters as art mirrors life. The passing of Jenny, Mona Kane, Cindy Chandler, Phoebe Tyler, Baby Lenora Hayward, and Palmer Cortland were some of the storylines that pulled viewers' heartstrings out.
But, the greatest loss I felt was the passing of Eileen Herlie and the death of her character Myrtle Fargate. Although Eileen was 90 at the time of her death in 2008, Myrtle had a fire in her right to the end. For viewers, it was heart-wrenching to see the raw, visible pain fellow characters went through at the news of her passing. Myrtle was such an integral part of the Pine Valley fabric there was a special tribute held in her honor in which Agnes Nixon made a rare appearance to pay her respects to Myrtle and Eileen. Myrtle had a twinkle in her eyes and a wonderful approach to life, loving every moment.
WHEN we can once again visit Pine Valley, there will forever be a little empty corner in it that Myrtle should be filling.
Megan and Jake, OLTL
ReplyDeleteSecond runner up: Duke and Anna, GH
Two that come to my mind right away are both on GH, & that is B.J.'s death & Maxie getting her heart, & Robin & Stones being HIV positive ending in Stone's death. There are so many on all 3 shows, but those were the first two that came to my mind.
ReplyDeleteI am right there with you on these storylines.
DeleteI don't know if you'd call this a story, but the ending of "One Life To Live".... :(
ReplyDeleteActually the cancellations of each of the cancelled soaps is the saddest! I was going to put a disclaimer in about the cancellations! lol
DeleteLuna passing on OLTL...she was the best thing that ever happened to Max. He was never the same after that.
ReplyDeleteWow, too many to name just one. First one that came to mind was Robin and Stone followed closely by Megan and Jake and when Kendal thought Zach died. I could go on and on because their have been so many stories that touch my heart throughout the years to mention them all.
ReplyDeleteFrankie's murder on Another World.
ReplyDeleteAside from the Cancellations....
ReplyDeleteThe shows have had so many sad deaths and the deaths affect the viewer as if they were family members.
AMC: Jenny and Myrtle's deaths..
DOOL: Steve's "death", Death of Tom and Alice; Renee's death; Roman's 'death' on STefano's island and he was being held by Bo on the beach. Zach's death.
GH: BJ's heart storyline.. painfully sad to watch as a parent makes the gut wrenching decision to remove a child from life support so another may live. Stone's death was also very sad.
OLTL: Megan's death, Luna's death and Ben's death. Megan's was terribly sad and that stands out as the saddest death on OLTL for me. I also found Gabrielle's death to be quite sad at the hands of the Music Box Killer and Bo was holding her lifeless body in his arms.
Search for Tomorrow: Ryder's death
Another World: Mack's death and Frankie's murder.
On OLTL, Megan's death while Jake held her and they looked out the window at their tree.
ReplyDeleteOn GH, Dominique's death in Scott's arms.
For me it was the AGENDA based killing of Jacob Martin Webber-Morgan. That storyline was the worst and despite viewers pleas not to go with this story it still aired and was done so horribly and didn't showcase the characters it should have. This was poorly done all around.
ReplyDeleteAnother from All My Children was Laura, Brooke's little girl hit and killed by a drunk driver. The whole story line along with the funeral was a real tearjerker. Donna sang at the funeral, and she sang just beautifully. I will not forget the feeling her voice left me with.
ReplyDeleteI agree. I remember Brook breaking up when she was bringing out her Christmas Decorations and pulling out Laura's stocking.
DeleteEven though it is a happy time of year I think of that moment when I decorate every year and pull out our own stockings
Oh my God yes! That storyline was heartbreaking!
DeleteFor me it's always sad when actors pass away. When the character passes there is always room for them to return. (I really wanted Leo back) but when the actor passes you know that there is no way the character is going to return. I have mourned the deaths of Mona, Palmer, Myrtle, Asa and Clint just to name a few.
ReplyDeleteThe saddest time to me was when Bianca was told her baby died I will never forget the reaction she had.
Let me see if I can do this with out crying.I never new my grand parent's,I was not close to my mom and my dad died when I was ten.At fifteen a girl friend's mother took me in till the day she died I was one of her children.Alice Horton was my grand mother just what I wanted and I really loved that TV person.Donuts in her kitchen,Christmas and a shoulder to lean on!!
ReplyDeleteThat is a beautiful story!! Love to you.
DeleteAnother sad soap opera to me was when Jenny died on AMC.
ReplyDeleteAllen Spaulding dying and the end of Guiding Light.
ReplyDeleteYears ago I was stunned and saddened with Jenny's sudden death on AMC. More recently Meghan's death on OLTL and the saddest most recent one was baby Lucy's on AMC.
ReplyDeleteStone Cates dying hands down. I still cry my eyes out when I watch his scenes. Stone right before he died says "Robin I see you" (he was blind from the Aids)guts me even writing it now. Amazing writing and acting by all involved in that storyline.
ReplyDeletethe jake spencer storyline on gh i cried so hard that week worst storyline because they rushed it
ReplyDeleteSaddest and most shocking soap death, Mary Ryan on Ryan's Hope.
ReplyDeleteThe one that stands out for me is BJ's death on GH. You see, we shared the same name Barbara Jean. I cried a river when Tony went into Maxi's room and listened to her heart, knowing it was BJ's. Still brings tears to my eyes.
ReplyDeleteBoth Georgie and Emily Q's deaths on GH were very sad.
ReplyDeleteWhen Patrick Thornhart "died" on One Life to Live. I was working serious hours during the X-mas season and I had to tape the show. I watched the entire thing, FF-ing through the rest of the episode and I was bawling in bed!
ReplyDeleteCindy's death on AMC, Luna's death on OLTL
ReplyDeleteEmily's death on GH, and a close second Zach's supposed death on AMC
ReplyDeleteBJ's dieing and the death of Tony Jones on GH. Also it was very sad when the news of Palmer Cortland died. AMC was very good about doing flashbacks with the person that passed, showing their lives.
ReplyDeleteOne of the saddest storyline was on Guiding Light, When Maureen Baurer was killed off. I think that was the 1st step in the downward spiral of the show.
ReplyDeleteWhen Myrtle Fargate died. Eileen Herlie had been on AMC for such along time and she was a pure joy to watch.. I miss her and I miss AMC -OLTL too
ReplyDeletenot sure if my first post went though or not?? But in hearing some of what people have posted it reminded me of some others. In addition to B.J and Tony, I would also say Emily Quartermaine,Alan Quartermaine and Palmer Courtland
ReplyDeleteThere are so many!!!! BJ's death, Mona's death, Zack's death....so many times the soaps had made me cry. Not only sadness but happy tears too just like any other family. The saddest was the last weeks of both shows (All my Childern & One Life to Live). It's still so unreal that they're gone. Myself, like many others, thought the soaps would always be there. Who would have thought just a year ago the shows would be canceled???? It almost feels like when someone dies unexpectly in an accident!
ReplyDeleteThe saddest story for me was when Bo lost his son Drew after they were just reconnecting. The music was very powerful "Father and Son" by Cat Stevens and "You Can Close Your Eyes" by James Taylor were songs played, Bo cradling his dead son. On GH BJ dying was really heartbreaking, especially as a mother with small children at the time, it hit me hard.
ReplyDeleteAside from the cancellations, I agree with the other posters that there have been hundreds of amazing, heart-wrenching stories. Notably for me have been Stone's death on GH and Drew's death on OLTL. Recently, Robin's leaving has also been a tearful event.
ReplyDeleteThe saddest moment for me was Friday, January 13th. When the last episode aired for One Life to Live. I knew I was watching a part of my life for the last 43 years end. I have laughed. I have cried. I have enjoyed this show since I was 9 years old. I will miss it. As long as there is a half a chance that we can fight to get this show back on somewhere. I am in for the fight.
ReplyDelete110% agreed!!!!
DeleteBaby Megan's death on OLTL, Little Laura on AMC...
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdxeHFgrqgQ
ReplyDeleteWhen Robin told everyone she was HIV positive.
AMC Myrtle memorial was so sad especially like Flo said she had recently passed and everyone was so upset by it, including us the fans. OLTL when Megan died in Jakes arms, When Asa died on the show, and when they thought John had died and his funeral it tore me apart. When little Jake died.
ReplyDeleteFor AMC Jenny dying and Grandma Kate dying
ReplyDeleteOLTL Megan dying. I cried and cried The tree,valentine....oh and Baby Megan Victoria
GH BJ's death
Days the death of Isabella she was one of my favorites.
I think every one thinks cancelling the soaps.Mine is a cross between Mac on Another World I cried for days. The same is when Alice Horton died on DOOL .When you loose a soap person you take it like the lose of a friend.
